Origins

Doha Oilmen’s Golf Tournament

The inaugural event was held in 1998 when Wedge Louison, Billy Rushing and Lanier Lohn decided that the oil community in Qatar should hold a tournament worthy of the fabulous Doha golf club. As the founders moved on to other pastures, the organization has been taken on by a Committee who strive not only to ensure the event goes smoothly but to introduce improvements for a quality amateur event that we can all be proud of. Entry to the tournament is via sponsors invitation.

The tournament itself is always preceded by an evening dinner dance where all the registration formalities are initially dealt with, this then allows participants to get on with dinner, interact with other participants, enjoy the entertainment and hopefully win one of the many door prizes.

Your stamina will be tested the following day when we have morning and afternoon shotgun starts for the men on the Championship course along with a morning shotgun start for the Ladies on the Academy course. Solid sustenance is provided in the form of breakfast and lunch followed by an evening Awards dinner where prizes for winners, every hole and more door prizes are presented.

We hope you consider our event as being excellent value for money.

In 2002, at the instigation of the then chairman Mike Robinson, the Doha Oilmen’s Junior Golf Academy was set up. Initially there was a class of 12 juniors selected to participate. By the 2006/7 season the class had been increased to 24 juniors. Entry into the Junior Academy is a considered a prized achievement by the juniors and their parents and over the initial years junior academy members have won many competitions including the Doha Golf Club Championship – both Ladies and Gents, the Qatar Open and the Doha Mixed Open. They have also been successful in Junior Open competitions in the UAE which the Doha Oilmen’s sponsor trips for the members to compete in each year. The juniors are taught golf etiquette and rules in addition to the skills required to play the game by the highly skilled Doha Golf Club professionals and The Doha Oilmen’s Golf Tournament committee are proud of the achievements of the Academy members and their behavior on and off the golf course.
